Huge Pacific Wave Damages Student Vessel

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A 50-foot Pacific wave temporarily disabled a "Semester at Sea" ship filled with hundreds of college students Wednesday, injuring two crew members as it broke windows and damaged the vessel's controls, the Coast Guard said.

Coast Guard vessels and aircraft from Alaska and Hawaii were dispatched to help the 591-foot Explorer, about 650 miles south of the Aleutian Islands and about 1,600 miles from Honolulu.

The ship for a time operated on just one of its four engines and could do little more than keep the bow headed into heavy seas using emergency steering. By Wednesday evening, a second engine had been started and the ship was making headway at a speed of about 10 knots, or about 11.5 mph, said Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Glynn Smith in Alameda, Calif.

Jim Lawrence, a spokesman for V. Ships, the technical managers of the ship, said no one was critically hurt but he did not have details on injuries. He said the ship may head to Midway Island, about 800 miles away.

The weather in the region has been unsettled recently, with winds gusting to 50 mph or more.

Semester at Sea is a global comparative study-abroad program for undergraduate students, said Paul Watson, director of enrollment management for the Institute for Shipboard Education. The program is academically sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh.

The 100-day voyage began Jan. 18 in Vancouver, British Columbia, with 990 people aboard: 681 students, 113 faculty and staff and 196 crew members.

The ship never lost internal electrical power and maintained good communications with the Coast Guard, Smith said. A medical staff of two doctors and two nurses is on board.

... Root to tip it's roughly 16 inches... I want to donate it if possible, and I do want to go short, but not TOO short...

Does anyone know of a place that takes about 8 inches, instead of 10? If I cut less than 6 they won't keep it, they'll see it to '"offset manufacturing prices" but honestly I'd rather have the hair used in a wig, you know?

That sounds dumb, wanting my hair to be a wig... but if I was bald due to meds and whatnot, I'd probably want a wig too.

Ha ha ha, my Glitter girl is such a goof! She makes me all happy inside. I put a fly in there about an hour ago while she was asleep. Just now I heard a bang, and Glitter was up on the top of the cage hunting... but, she's not very good at it, it's very funny.... if the fly is to one side of her, she'll whip around to get it instead of slowly stalking the way Dizzy used to do. More often than not she gets a mouthful of air! But it's soooo cute.

Next weekend I'm sure will be extremely tiring. I have to serve friday saturday and sunday. Friday I have block in the morning, so that'll be a VERY long day. (>_<)

My tummy is rumbling today. I had two waffles this morning but it's not enough. And, I'm too cheap to go buy anything so I guess I'll deal with the strangeness. Rar.

Mom left a note in the hall last night for dad, it said to wake her at 8 or 9 if he wasn't able to go to k-mart at 8. He he he... Why are they trying to go to the k-mart in hershey so early, huh huh huh? Oh, I have a theory. Chriiiiiistmas. Yay!

The one above my left eye. Supposedly mom had me in my walker and I got to the gate at the top of the stairs and it let loose and I tumbled down the stairs. Mom says she had to take me to the hospital because there was so much blood, they were afraid I'd be blind. Luckily though the cut was high enough above my eye-eye that I'm not blind. Yay!

Oh also in 2nd grade the teacher was going around our circle of desks asking how many candles are in the advent wreath. She had one in her hand. Everyone was guessing the wrong amount because we were into advent and... well they were being dumb. So I let the girl beside me know what I thought of my classmates. The teacher saw and asked the girl to tell the class what I'd just said. She had no problem telling them all I thought they were stupid. Then the teacher asked me how many candles. I told her the correct amount, and she didn't say anything more. Freakin' nuns.

IM is being screwey. I don't know what's wrong with it. (>_<)
It kicked me off, and now it won't go back on. It keeps telling me "connection lost. check internet connection."
